R Ashwin Questions India's ODI World Cup Roadmap, Calls for Greater Clarity

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced concerns over Team India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, drawing a comparison between the coaching approaches of Gautam Gambhir and former head coach Rahul Dravid. Speaking about India's recent ODI series defeat to England, Ashwin said the team appears to lack a clear roadmap despite the return of experienced players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah.

Ashwin highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Hardik Pandya's availability due to recurring fitness concerns and questioned the team's continued search for makeshift all-rounders. While players like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube have been considered as alternatives, Ashwin believes India needs a more reliable long-term solution rather than relying on part-time options.

Reflecting on the 2023 ODI World Cup, Ashwin praised Rahul Dravid and the team management for adapting effectively after Hardik's injury. Instead of forcing a replacement into the same role, the team adjusted its strategy, trusted five specialist bowlers, and maintained stability within the squad. According to Ashwin, that clarity in roles helped India reach the World Cup final.

He also expressed concern that the current management has placed too much emphasis on multi-skilled cricketers, particularly in Test cricket, where specialist batters and bowlers remain crucial. Ashwin argued that selecting genuine match-winners should remain the priority rather than trying to build a team around utility players.

Looking ahead, Ashwin urged the selectors and team management to finalize a core group of 17 to 18 players and back them consistently over the next 14 months. He recommended creating a balanced squad with specialist batters, two wicketkeepers, three spinners, and five pace bowlers while rotating players within that pool. In his view, establishing clarity, consistency, and defined roles now will give India the best chance of assembling its strongest playing XI for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
